Possum Kingdom is one of the clearest lakes in Texas, carved into the Palo Pinto mountains on the Brazos River. The water's at its prettiest in early summer.

Hell's Gate

By boat only (~15–20 min run)

Two 90-foot limestone cliffs guarding a narrow strait between the mainland and Devil's Island — the most iconic spot on the lake, with 26 feet of deep water below.

•Boats raft up here all summer; it's the front-row seat for the legendary Fourth of July fireworks.
•Cliff jumping happens here, but it's genuinely dangerous — every year brings injuries. Not worth it.
•Go early on the 4th — the cove packs in fast.

Swimming & quiet coves

Away from Hell's Gate, dozens of calm coves are perfect for anchoring, swimming, and floating the afternoon away.

•Possum Kingdom State Park has a designated swim beach with no boat traffic — great with kids.
•The lake drops off fast near the cliffs, so keep an eye on new or young swimmers.

Fishing

PK is one of Texas's best-known fisheries — famous for striped bass, plus largemouth, sand bass, catfish, and white crappie.

•No fishing license needed when fishing from shore inside the state park.
•Guided striper trips run out of several marinas.
•The Cliffs Marina ship store stocks tackle, bait, ice, and snacks.
